Our latest find from the 150+ year old house of Contratto: the Contratto For England Brut Sparkling Rose. This pale pink beauty is dry as a bone, with lots of delicious fruit and zippy acidity. Serve it as your house aperitif, or with a bowl of marcona almonds and chunks of Manchego cheese. If you're feeling decadent, add a wax paper cone of truffle fries and watch the delight unfold. Fried shrimp with a lemon aioli or crisp-roasted chicken with tangerines and thyme in the cavity will work seamlessly next to this beautiful bubbly, as will a dessert of apricot tart tatin with a generous dollop of craime fraiche on top. What are you drinking this Valentine's Day??
Robert Parker, Jr.'s Wine Advocate: "Contratto is the sparkling wine estate owned by Giorgio Rivetti of La Spinetta. The most structured and important of these sparkling wines from Contratto, the 2015 Alta Langa Metodo Classico Blanc de Noir Pas Dosé For England opens to a pretty golden appearance with light copper highlights. The bouquet is solid and beautifully put together with equal billing to orchard fruit, crushed stone and toasted almond. This wine is more mineral-driven than it is yeast-driven, and that is the most compelling trait of sparkling wines made in the up-and-coming Alta Langa appellation. Drink date: 2020-2035." Jul 2020
Winery: "The name comes from the historic label “Reserve for England Extra Dry”, which can be considered one of the first modern dry sparkling wines, since at the time (in the 20’s) the other sparkling wines had more residual sugar (50/60 g/L). This wine was originally intended for the British market, from which it takes its name, that was the first one that developed a drier taste. Nowadays it’s proposed by the firm as Rosé and Blanc the Noir, both of them made with 100% Pinot Noir.
Very fine and persistent perlage. The nose expresses all the character of the Pinot Noir opening with an intense mineral note that recalls the marly limestone soils typical of Alta Langa region, followed by an enveloping note of flowers, yeasts and smoking and warmer tones, as red fruits (redcurrant and blueberry) that stand out on the bouquet. In the mouth we can find the same aromas with definite and balanced character, almost sapid, characterized by long persistence and great freshness, two qualities that allow it to ideally combine with the entire meal."
