With a masterful balance between tight acidity and sinfully decadent, concentrated fruit and floral flavors, it is remarkably delicious. Made with the Zibibbo grape, otherwise known as Moscato di Alessandria, it is not to be missed. The winery highly recommends it as a 'meditation' wine, and we couldn't agree more. It stands alone beautifully. Or, you can use it with a last course of aged blue cheese or a caramelized apple Tarte Tatin. We're envisioning 1000 and One Nights, veiled temptresses, sugared dates, and the moon glowing over a tent in the dessert. A brass tray with knafeh topped with chopped pistachios and a generous drizzle of rose or orange blossom water, accompanied by a glass of Ben Rye. What do you see?
Antonio Galloni's Vinous: "Bright yellow-gold color. Pungent, tangy aromas of orange peel, grapefruit, lime blossom, apricot and sweet spices on the mesmerizingly pure nose. Juicy, intense and penetrating, with razor-sharp acidity lifting and focusing the thick, concentrated grapefruit, honeyed peach, orange peel, cinnamon and ginger flavors. This shows a near-perfect sugar/acid balance, and comes across as light on its feet for such a rich, concentrated wine. The slowly building, palate-staining finish goes on and on, with repeating floral and honey notes. This is always Donnafugata's best wine, and this vintage is one of their best ever. Readers should be aware that Moscato di Alessandria is usually called Zibibbo in Italy (which is also its official name, by the way)." Mar 2014
Winery: "Bright amber, Ben Rye? 2012 shows an ample and round bouquet characterized by pleasant mineral hints: balsamic and salty scents combine with the classic aromas of fresh apricots and candied orange peel. Mineral notes, more intense on the palate, together with a fresh vein of acidity, enliven the caressing sweetness of this Passito di Pantelleria. A complex and rewarding wine that surprises with its very long persistence.
Food & Wine: with blue or aged cheeses, with dried fruit-based pastry (almond paste) and apple pies. Try it with chocolate, gianduja or ‘De Bondt Rye?’ pralines. Extraordinary alone, as a meditation wine. Serve it in tulip-shaped goblets of medium size, slightly bellied; uncork at time of serving; excellent at 14° C (57° F).
Occasions: an extraordinary meditation wine, it's the ideal companion while reading or listening to music. We recommend it as a sweet ending of a formal dinner as well as a romantic date.
Art & Wine: from the Arabic term "Son of the Wind" because the wind sweeps constantly around the grape clusters on Pantelleria. And the island's winds bring with them a profusion of fragrances so powerful that you can touch them. An author label telling the love, the care and the effort of heroic viticulture on an island unique and fascinating. A fresh and enchanting portrait that reveals its essence."
