Belle Glos is the project of Joseph Wagner, son of Caymus winemaker Chuck Wagner of "Special Selection" Cabernet fame. His winery is devoted entirely to distinctive, single-vineyard Pinot Noir. So, to review: the prodigy of an iconic winemaker decides to focus on one varietal exclusively. Sounds like a great idea to us...Without further ado, we say share your first glass with wild mushroom and burrata bruschettas. Your options for this stunning California Pinot are many. The seductive fruit, delicious acidity, baking spices and gorgeous texture lend themselves to many different flavors. Most obviously, we recommend this wine with roast chicken boasting an award-winningly crispy skin. A wonderful make-ahead dish is eggplant stuffed with lamb and pine nuts. If meat isn't on the menu, make it a green lentil curry. If pasta is on it, we say get some fresh fettucine and toss it with a chicken liver sauce. We could go on and on. The bottom line is this winery is at the intersection of Clark Avenue and Telephone road. After you drain your first glass we predict you'll find yourselves at the corner of Pour Me and Another...
Winery: "The color is a rich scarlet-red, with opulent aromas of blackberry, black cherry, cinnamon, nutmeg and a hint of caramel. The palate comes alive with flavors of ripe raspberries, strawberry jam, a dense blackberry core, warm gingerbread, and a hint of toffee. It is perfectly balanced with refreshing acidity, plush weight on the mid-palate and a wonderfully supple texture. The expansive fruit flavors carry through to a long, pure and persistent finish. When asked to describe this wine, I simply say it€۪s like a taste of Christmas, all year long.
My goal with each of the Belle Glos single-vineyard Pinot Noirs is to express the genuine uniqueness of each vineyard site and to craft a true style of California Pinot Noir that is layered, complex, fruit-forward and rich. Clark & Telephone was the very first vineyard release under the Belle Glos label and it continues to enchant us with its delicious, supple, and sweet ripe-fruit character we get from this particular site year-after-year.
The Clark & Telephone vineyard was established in 1972. It lies on a west-facing slope just thirteen miles from the ocean in an area where weather patterns pull from west-to-east, bringing cool fog and coastal breezes inland. This climate makes for later-ripening, longer-hanging grapes that have a delightful fruitiness, great acidity and underlying flavor nuances that give this wine additional complexity. As a result of intensive pruning and crop thinning, the vines produce loose clusters, with small, intensely flavored berries, yielding dense, dark-berry fruit and abundant sweet brown spice characteristics that are synonymous with this particular clone."
