Alvaro Palacios Finca Dofi Priorat 2013
Free shipping on 6QtyAlvaro Palacios is on the cover of Wine Spectator. That's because not only is one of his wines widely considered the most prized from Spain, he is a visionary whose heart belongs to the old vines which grow in the Priorat region. He refers to his winery site as "an historical legacy". Those vines give us Álvaro Palacios Finca Dofí. Oh, and, he's got some expertise to boot. Born into a wine family in Rioja, he then received his training in the chateaus of Bordeaux. Today's wine has benefited tremendously from Palacios' experience; Parker says it's his "best Dofí to date". If that's not enough, it's actually ready to drink now. It boasts the costomary power and depth of Palacios' wines, with stunning balance, beautiful, ripe fruit, spices and plenty of minerality. Don't miss out on this icon, winelovers, la vida es demasiado corta!
Robert Parker, Jr.'s Wine Advocate: "2011 was not an easy act to follow as it produced what probably was the best Dofí to date, yet the 2013 Finca Dofí is as good or even better! The single-vineyard 2013 Finca Dofí, made since 2011 with Garnacha and perhaps 5% Cariñena (previously made with Cabernet Sauvignon), was fermented in oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in barriques for 16 months after malolactic. They have achieved a level of sophistication in the élevage of this wine because it is completely different from the wines of, say, 2005 (or 1995!) that were hard and full of tannins. This 2013 is nothing like that. Of course, there are tannins, but the texture is completely different, more akin to a Barolo with earthiness that is coated by ripe fruit to create a singular, unmistakable Priorat. Again, the best Dofí to date. Drink 2015-2023.
I tasted with Álvaro Palacios a few days after bottling the 2013s, as I had to taste the Riojas from the family winery Palacios Remondo, so we did Rioja and Priorat at the same time. The wines might be suffering a bit from the operation, but it's clearly an exceptional vintage. While 2012 is Mediterranean, 2013 is truly Atlantic. Lively and fresh wines. 2013 L'Ermita is other worldy, without a doubt a 100-pointer. I visited the vineyard twice this year and the work they do there is unbelievable, the vines are manicured! Other than the exceptional l'Ermita, 2013 in general might be their best vintage ever." Jun 2015
Trade Notes: "A perfect vintage for the Finca Dofí. With beautifully integrated alcohol and more freshness, this is lifted and elegant but with the power and depth we expect from Palacios. Superb fragrant fruit with liquorice, exotic spice and minerals in abundance. Grippy but seductive on the palate, the balance is exquisite; soft enough to drink now but built to last."
"Always eagerly anticipated; Finca Dofi is intense, generous and velvety, yet it remains a very fairly priced offering from Álvaro Palacios. The 2013 effort has wonderful floral notes, framed by fine tannins and acidity. Vibrant and forward, thus extended ageing isn’t required but this will develop until 2025. A good introduction to fine Priorat."
