Stags' Leap Winery Ne Cede Malis Petite Sirah 2013

Christophe Paubert, winemaker and former Chateau d'Yquem cellar master, lovingly crafted this unique blend, so you won't want to miss it. It's deep and dark, brimming with rich, lush fruit, and touting big tannins. They are big, but refined at the same time, so as not to overwhelm the palate. In other words, the perfect partner for your meaty dishes, especially those with good fat and big body. Why not hop the continent and put together some Garofalato di Manzo, braised, clove-scented beef from Rome? Or, play up the tannins and floral nuances in this Napa red with rack of lamb marinated with onions and pomegranate juice, then grilled. For classic with a twist, we think a grilled porterhouse with a sauce of cognac, raisins and black pepper would be delicious! Open another bottle and finish off the evening strong with a sharp, cloth-wrapped cheddar. No humbug here, winelovers...
Robert Parker, Jr.'s Wine Advocate: "Lastly, and probably the rarest wine is the ancient-vine 2013 Petite Sirah Estate Ne Cede Malis, 85% Petite Sirah and 15% mixed blacks from one block planted in 1929. With oodles of blackberry fruit, damp earth, white flowers and almost painfully extracted, but with only 30% new oak, this is a massively concentrated monster of a wine to put away for 10-15 years and drink over the following 50+ years. I’m not kidding. Drink date: 2026 - 2077."
Winery: "Ne Cede Malis - “Do not give in to misfortune,” a Latin motto from Virgil given by founder Horace Chase to Stags' Leap's oldest vineyard -- is the source of grapes that are hand chosen and picked, called a “field blend.” The wine shows off the fruit-forward Petite Sirah and the subtleties of other blended Rhone varietals.
A one-of-a-kind field blend from the Stags’ Leap Winery estate, the 2013 Ne Cede Malis reveals an opaque purple color that is the first telltale to this compelling wine. Amazingly deep, abundant flavors of blue and black fruit come together with notes of black ground peppercorn, black licorice and violet. Rich, big and expressive, the wine shows all the hallmarks of a great Petite Sirah, but is well-balanced with silky tannins and round texture that suggest incredible aging potential over many years."
