Winery: "Petit Verdot, even in the small quantities present in this wine, exudes its signature textural density and oral nose of purple and blue flowers that complement Cabernet’s macerated red and blue fruit so well. Cassis, graphite and crushed rock follow through on the palate, with a vibrant, cherry cola tone that rings in the finish. The fruit for this wine was harvested from predominantly young vines, and their youthful energy resonates on the palate. It is medium in weight with a supple, juicy core of blackberries that is lifted by hints of red licorice and spice. There is an expansiveness on the finish as the tannins coat the palate. The tannins themselves are very dusty, like a cherry flavored talcum powder.
Cabernet Sauvignon - the core of what we do and also the greatest opportunity to highlight our diversity. Comprised of deeper, richer soil profiles (Pleasanton loam series) from both A and C block, this wine has the body weight of a “baby Solari.” This wine, created through blending a mix of young and old vines, is an attempt to imitate Solari, but a human can’t replicate what Mother Nature creates - and that is what the difference is between our Cabernet and our Solari.
This wine is incredibly expressive right now, with a wonderful balance of aroma, flavor and structure. As such, I recommend drinking this wine upon release and for the next 3-5 years. That said, an additional 10-15 years of cellaring will reward those who enjoy watching the darker, youthful flavors evolve into tobacco leaf and plum."
Winemaker Dan Petroski: "A Brooklyn native, Petroski resigned from publishing in 2005 after working for Sports Illustrated and TIME in New York for nearly a decade. Having developed a penchant for Italian wine, he moved to Sicily for a complete life reset, eventually returning to the States to find work in Napa’s wine industry. While landing a spot in a cellar, he founded his own brand, Massican. Today, he is the Cellar Master for Larkmead.
For Larkmead, he produces savory, intellectual – and very expensive – Cabernet. Granted, “intellectual” is not typically an adjective used for the hedonistic style pervasive in Napa, but that’s not the kind of wine Petroski makes. By picking earlier and separating lots by soil for the “Larkmead” line (Dr. Olmo, Solari, and The Lark), the product is as much about the pleasure of a fine-tuned Cab as the exercise of understanding it.
