Beringer Napa Valley Vineyards Viognier 2007

Beringer Napa Valley Vineyards Viognier 2007

Winery:  "Honeysuckle and orange blossom are immediate in the nose, giving way to apricot and melon flavors. There is a crisp citrus note that runs throughout, and an additional layer of depth with a hint of white ginger. I love the balance between the honeyed, ripe fruit flavors and the bright, crisp acidity of the wine overall.

This single vineyard Viognier comes from Beringer’s Oak Knoll Vineyard, located on the valley floor south of the town of Yountville. Oak Knoll Vineyard experiences the southern Napa Valley’s regular variation of cool nights—with fog from the San Pablo Bay that lingers long into the morning hours before the sun breaks through—and warm, sunny afternoons. These climatic influences combine with restrictive soils to provide an excellent environment for growing Viognier grapes with concentrated fruit flavors while still retaining the varietal’s delicate aromas and lively acidity.

To protect Viognier’s aromas and flavors, the grapes were picked in the cool morning hours and whole clusters were sent directly to the press, bypassing the crusher to prevent the loss of aromatics through oxidation. Laurie focused on preserving the varietal’s fresh fruit characteristics by fermenting the majority of the wine in stainless steel. She aged approximately 15% of the juice in small, seasoned French Nevers oak barrels for five months, lending the final blend additional layers of body and complexity. The addition of a small amount of Chardonnay added an element of richness to the final blend."

Wired For Wine:  The full body of this Napa Valley Viognier wraps around its crisp acidity and fruits to present a delicious final product.  The dry acidity is the perfect foil for rich butter and cream sauces so go ahead and indulge.   Its fruit nuances make it a great companion for curry dishes or Asian food with a little kick.  Looking for an excuse to splurge on fresh lobster?  Here it is!!  That would be our choice, but any hearty white fish like Chilean Sea Bass would be another good choice, as would roast pork or chicken.  While you're deciding, sip a glass and snack on a bowl of roasted nuts tossed with a little salt.  When do we eat?
