Altanuta Pinot Grigio 2008
Winemaker: "Color is a bright straw yellow. Floral and citrus aromas. A rich, full, and clean mouthful of green apple, pear-like flavors with a zingly and balanced lemony acidity. Altanuta’s roots run deep in a centuries-old tradition of fine winemaking. Through experience comes knowledge, and almost 700 years of winemaking expertise and an intimate understanding of the region’s unique land, air and water elements make Altanuta a wine of uncommon elegance, craftsmanship and taste. Located in the Alto Adige region, in the northeast corner of Italy near Austria, Altanuta is created from grapes grown on rugged, mountainous slopes that rose from immense upheaval in the earth’s crust millions of years ago. Appropriately, even the wine’s name, Altanuta (alto = high, tenuta = estate), evokes the crisp, refreshing mountain breezes and remote terrain of its birthplace. It is the combination of high altitude air, soil composition and close proximity to the sun’s rays that gives Altanuta Pinot Grigio its distinguished character memorable flavor to be savored with food, yet light enough to be enjoyed as an aperitif."
Wired for Wine: This is an up and coming Pinot Grigio and for good reason...a great taste at a reasonable price. Dry, clean, and refreshing. Beats Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio hands down and for less than half the price. The beauty of the Altanuta's rich full mouth is that it is able to stand alone as a delicious apéritif. Or, add a drop of Crème de Cassis for a spectacular kir. The lemony acidity of the Pinot Grigio makes it the perfect pairing for light seafood and shellfish dishes. We recommend a Dover sole, or steamed mussels in white wine and garlic. Don't forget the crusty bread to mop up the sauce... It will do very nicely indeed with a tuna tartare appetizer as well. As for slightly more substantial fare, we love the Altanuta with roast pork. We stuff a nice big pork loin and make a delicious fresh apple sauce for on the side. Roast some potatoes in the oven after they've been tossed with olive oil, sea salt and freshly ground pepper and dinner is almost ready. This Pinot Grigio's clean mouthfeel makes it a great companion for salads. Toss one up to go with the meal, mix it with a tarragon vinaigrette and then you're ready. After it's over, pour another glass to go with the apple tart for dessert, and everybody goes home happy. É bella! Size: 750 ml Varietal: 100% Pinot Grigio Alcohol: 13.0% Vintage: 2008 Region: Alto Adige D.O.C., northeast Italy
